Orpheus Reviews

From Gordon Harris, NODA SE, District 5.

I have never seen ‘Orpheus in the underworld’. I had no idea what to expect from Kentish Opera. Need I worry “never”every production I have seen from Kentish Opera have been stupendous and I have seen a lot from Kentish Opera.
Saying that, I find it different to find new words to review them.

Take three people Stephen Brown (Director) Robyn Sevastos (Musical Director and conductor) Carol Stevenson costumes and Susanna Elvy also Choreographer by Mellissa Saunders there wasn’t a huge amount but what there was beautifully executed by her dancers.

Stephen’s direction was solid as always.

I loved the virtual open stage uncluttered stage by huge sets but it fitted in well with this production of Orpheus.

Stephen you chose your cast expertly and all did you proud. I can’t single any of them out. But what voices they had I heard every word. Especially Richard Decker what a voice!! All the principles gave us professional performers. A massive amount of Nymphs Gods and Goddesses formed the Chorus and they gave us a wonderful sound.

It was a stupendous Orpheus. I didn’t have to get my poison pen out when reviewing Kentish Opera.

Thank you for inviting myself and my guest.

Good luck with further productions and thank you for giving Kent a high standard of Opera.

Hi Maggie and Peter

Another wonderful performance !

Amanda and I came to see Orpheus and the Underworld this afternoon. It was fantastic and congratulations ! The whole thing was a spectacle of colour with fantastic singing and we loved the humour. It was better than Glyndebourne.

I HOPE THAT YOU DID NOT MISS THE PARTY!

The Can-Can! Moulin Rouge! Spoofing both mythology and the foibles of man. Offenbach's smash-hit operetta was one hell of a party. Eurydice tired of bickering with annoying husband Orpheus, decides it might be fun to party with the Gods below and takes off with Pluto… raucous fun, mortals in love, gods in disguise, lively tunes, and that famous dance ensued!

This new production, directed by Stephen Antony Brown, brought this wonderful operetta to life. It was fully staged with fabulous costumes and sung in English. Kentish Opera's impressive chorus return with professional soloists and orchestra conducted by Robyn Sevastos. The costumes were designed by Carol Stevenson.
